ABOUT THE HIV RESEARCH COORDINATION UNIT
The HIV Research Coordination Unit (RCU) was established on October 15, 2008 at the National AIDS Council Secretariat, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The research unit aims to fill a gap in the national response to HIV and AIDS by helping to coordinate all HIV related research in the country and linking research to Monitoring and Evaluation Unit at NACS and the Surveillance Unit at the National Department of Health. The role of the unit is not to conduct research but rather to support research processes and help coordinate HIV related research across the country. The unit works with researchers, research institutes and universities both in PNG and overseas to conduct high quality research based on the priorities highlighted in the National Research Agenda for HIV and AIDS.
The staff in the unit provide strategic direction for HIV related research as well as provide technical support, literature reviews and recommendations from research studies. This will also include strengthening information sharing and dissemination processes so that research information is accessible to stakeholders, researchers and policy makers
Strengthening of research skills and research capacity is also a core responsibility of the unit; such support include research skills building trainings; as well as the launch and implementation of the National Research Capacity Plan for HIV and AIDS.
The unit is based at NACS and staff report to the Director of the National AIDS Council Secretariat. Management and performance of the research unit is conducted through JTAI Implementing Service Provider. The research unit is supported by a AusAID Senior Research Advisor and funding for the unit is provided by PNG-Australia HIV and AIDS Program.
